Defence academy syllabus to be revised every five years

The National Defence Academy has decided to revise its syllabus every five years.

The National Defence Academy (NDA) has decided to revise its syllabus every five years. The decision was taken on the basis of a report submitted by a study group formed in 2003 headed by Air Marshal SK Malik,PVSM,AVSM. Earlier, the revision did not have specific time period.

“The National Defence Academy was shifted to Khadakwasla in 1955 and a number of revisions have been made in the syllabus at different times. All these revisions and alterations in the curriculum were made as per the requirements at those specific times and were not periodical. However, taking a note of the inputs given by finishing academies and a committee consisting of serving lieutenant generals and members of the civilian faculty, the decision has been made to revise the syllabus after every five years starting this year,” said an NDA official.

Recently, the NDA had introduced some of the contemporary topics such as nano technology and environment science related topics in its syllabus. “The change in syllabus is accompanied by faculty, finance and infrastructure upgradation and though the revising committee was constituted in 2003,the suggestions were implemented only in phased manner over the past few years, but now the revision would be in five-years time ,” added the official.

The decision aims at creating a good military officer with sound military knowledge to meet the expectations of various services, the officer said.

Earlier, the academy underwent a major syllabus revision in 1969 where the syllabus was changed on the of basis inputs given by a committee headed by one Dr Mahajani. “The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) affiliation occurred in 1974 post which the revision occurred only after a gap of 12 years when a committee headed by Vice Admiral Nadkarni suggested an increase in the number of service- related subjects in the syllabus,” added the officer.

While the 10+2+3 formula, wherein the admission was given after class XII,came into being in 1989,the next revision took place only 10 years later in 1999 when BSc Computer Science was introduced at the NDA. “It was then the management also decided to reduce the number of foreign languages from seven to four. The last revision took place in 2003 when a foundation course that amalgamated military training with general study, which involved environmental study, economics, geo politics, area studies and current issues, was introduced,” added the official.
