Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday said the decision to reserve land for biodiversity park (BDP) has been taken in the interest of the city.

“Rapid urbanisation has changed the environment of the city. There is a need to maintain the green cover of the city and the state government after due considerations took a decision in favour of it,” he said.

When pointed out that corporators in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have passed a resolution allowing construction on 10 per cent area of the land reserved for BDP,he said,“I am not aware of the resolution. I will look into the issue when it comes to the state government.”

He said the state government has taken a decision based on a study and discussions over it for a year.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said his party was in favour of maintaining the green cover of the city.

The ruling NCP with the support of BJP had managed to push a resolution allowing construction on land reserved for BDP despite the Shiv Sena, the MNS and the Congress opposing the move. Interestingly, city NCP chief Vandana Chavan too had opposed the resolution. A Shiv Sena delegation led by party leader Shyam Deshpande had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister opposing construction on the reserved land.
