Decision to make class XI admission offline faces protest

Other than Pune, Mumbai too has an online admission procedure for class 11.

Political organisations in the city protested outside Deputy Director of Education Suman Shinde’s office on Wednesday against the latter’s move to make the remaining admissions to class XI offline. Although they demanded that a fourth round of online admission procedure be held for the remaining students, Shinde said that the procedure will remain offline and measures will be taken to curb malpractice.

This is the first time admissions to class XI have been held online. Other than Pune, Mumbai too has an online admission procedure for class 11. The Common Admission Procedure(CAP) was held online this month so that the procedure would be transparent and the students would get seats as per their preference and merit in a foolproof manner. Three rounds were held online after which Shinde announced offline admission for students who were yet to get seats.

After the third round, about 3000 students remained without allotment despite applying through the online CAP. The main problem, said officials, was that even though the students had less percentage in class X, they had given names of colleges that had high cut off percentage as their options. This has led to many students not getting any college allotment despite over 6000 seats remaining vacant in colleges in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

“Offline process cannot ensure transparency that was there in online procedure. In offline procedure there are chances of agents and touts interfering in the admission process. Hence we are demanding a fourth online round too,” said Vikas Patil, an activist who protested on Wednesday. He has also submitted a letter to Shinde with their demands.

Suman Shinde, deputy director of education, Pune and CAP committee, said, “There will be no issue of malpractice as strict instruction has been given to the principals regarding how to conduct the admission procedure. If any college gives admission out of process or without following the merit list, the principal will be held responsible and severe action will be taken by education department.”
The list of vacant seats and the cut off percentage in each college as per quota classification can be downloaded from official website <http://pune//fyjc.org.in> under the tab ‘Applicant and Parent’. The students now have to go to individual colleges and take admissions.
