Muktangan Mitra,a de-addiction centre, has embarked on a mission to spread awareness about the evils of various addictions among the warkaris of the Sant Dnyaneshwar.

Apart from putting up banners and distributing pamphlets among the warkaris,a group of volunteers from Muktangan spoke personally to them, about the addictions. Mukta Puntambekar, deputy director,Muktangan said,“This is for the fifth year that we are talking to them. Many of them are in the habit of chewing gutkha and smoking beedis. Even many of the women have various addictions. At first,we were distributing pamphlets. Later,we also talked to a few warkaris personally.”

The group mainly spoke to these people about the ill effects of tobacco, alcohol, beedi and cigarette addiction. “Over the years we have seen many of the warkaris from the Pune area come back to us and enquire about how to get over such addictions. Today as well, many people came up to us personally and asked us how they can get de-addicted. We gave them some primary information about what can be done,” added Mukta.

The group will also offer free treatment at the centre’s outpatient department in the next few days. “Since the response for the initiative has been good and more and more warkaris come forward every year,we have announced a free treatment camp for the warkaris.”
