On day two of the one-way traffic on Jangli Maharaj Road – Fergusson College Road circular route today, the police found a board, installed by unknown persons, condemning the traffic police for the new arrangement.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil said that he expected some criticism from local residents initially. “The one-way traffic has forced many local citizens to change their travel routes they have been following for several years. So,it is obvious that these citizens would not be happy,” Patil said.

“But I would request the citizens to discuss their complaints with the police. Putting up boards against us will not help. We are open for talk. People can also mail their complaints at punepolicetraffic@gmail.com. I am personally looking into all suggestions and complaints,” he said.

“I am sure citizens would understand the advantages of one-way traffic. We are also taking up steps to reduce the flow of traffic on the internal roads between JM and FC Roads,” Patil said.

Meanwhile, the police have fixed rumbling strips at seven spots on JM and FC Roads. “Initially we installed rumbling strips at Modern chowk,Natraj chowk,Balgandharva chowk and near Kamat Hotel on JM Road. In addition, we have fixed the rumbling strips at Dyaneshwar Paduka chowk,Rupali hotel and Fergusson College on FC Road,” Patil said. “It was observed that average speed of vehicles on the circular route came down from 30 km/hr to 26 km/hr because of rumbling strips,” he said.

Some minor accidents happened on the circular route as people were driving fast without following lane discipline. Traffic cops were busy directing the citizens who were confused because of the new arrangement.

Patil said that pedestrian signal will be installed at the Fergusson College chowk. “The college is likely to start from Monday so,a pedestrian signal will be installed to avoid problems for the students,” he said.
