Actors Emraan Hashmi and Prachi Desai, who were in Pune on Thursday to promote their forthcoming film Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, insist that it’s not just another gangster flick
Guns and drama, violent sprees and heroic comebacks underworld movies have always reflected the darker side of life. While grizzly crime and grey characters mark such movies,Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, set to release this August, promises colour and a definite outline of history for the characters. “The movie is a lesson in history,” said Emraan Hashmi, who was in Pune yesterday to promote the film along with co-star Prachi Desai at Fame Fun and Shop,Fatimanagar.
So while the stars greeted their fans with loud cheering and singing,it was their obvious excitement about the movie that made an impression. “I began my acting career a few years ago,but I still feel like I’m very new here, and I think this film will show me my path,if not my stand,” smiled the pretty actress while stressing on how important the film will be for her career graph. Agreeing with her,Emraan delved into the immense preparations that had gone into the making of the movie. “This movie is a tipping point for me. It will give my career an all new dimension. It will give my skills as an actor a breakthrough,” he added.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbai is based on the underworld scene in Mumbai during the 60s and 70s. Emraan plays Shoaib,a gangster who challenges the rule and authority of the underworld don played by Ajay Devgn. Both the actresses Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai portray the women of that period. “I did try to take cues from the actors of the 60s and 70s by constantly watching their movies, but most part of my character Mumtaz was shaped on the sets. In fact, many a time,I wasn’t even given a script and had to give an impromptu response to what Emraan did,” revealed Prachi.
The movie is speculated to be based on actual happenings while also covering the growth of the Mumbai underworld – from crime and smuggling in its early stages to its connection with international terrorism in recent times. It is rumoured that the movie is loosely based on the lives of Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim, and this spelled trouble as Suleman Mirza, the adopted son of Haji Mastan, filed a suit for an injunction order against the release of the film. We quite understand their concern and we know that they are just being cautious, which is why we have asked them to watch the movie first. After that,I am sure they will be realise that it is not based on the life of Haji Mastan. In fact,we have covered the story from a lot of sources. It actually celebrates that time, and any resemblance to anyone is purely coincidental,” clarified Emraan. The movie will now be released with a disclaimer that the film has no resemblance to Haji Mastan.
