Course of choice

It's a familiar sight every year, this time around - campuses, tea stalls and even dinner discussions are all about what to do next,as students prepare to jump into the college arena.

With the changing trends in education, there is a noticable flip in the courses prefered by students this season

It’s a familiar sight every year, this time around – campuses, tea stalls and even dinner discussions are all about what to do next,as students prepare to jump into the college arena. The sophomores suddenly turn into counselling gurus and free tips and guidance sell like hot cakes. However, each year,it’s the student who feels like the weight of the world is hanging around his neck as the journey to making the right decision begins. But while these tunes of unsurity and confusion are loud around, the city youth seems to have turned wiser this year. Amidst ‘okay to be confused’ confessions and a broader attitude, the city students are increasingly signing up for courses that are out of the blue.

While ever-green courses this year too remain engineering and medicine with majority of students plying for them,it’s the more specialised and focused ones that are getting the most picks. According to a recent online research,60 percent students still preferred the conventional engineering and medical courses. Shares George Varghese,a consultant psychotherapist,“Rather than a general course,it is the specific courses that are being targeted by the youth. So in medicine, say a course like optometry is in demand and in engineering, courses like aeronautical engineering or aerospace and marine engineering are also doing well.”

On the other side of the fence, courses like BBA and BCA are still a hit with a lot of students opting for them. Says Ashwani Bhakoo,a career counsellor,“BBA and BCA are very popular, and more and more students go for them. But I think the reason why they never seem to go out of fashion is the time and flexibility they give to do something else with it.”

Flexibility of time is one major reason why these courses are chosen. Kanaka Bhosale ,a second year arts student at Fergusson College, who is pursuing jewellery design along side her degree, says,“Jewellery designing has been an interest since my school days. With the extra time in college,I have been able to take this course up and am really happy with it.” Bhosale also has her own line of designs ready to be exhibited. Extra time also has empowered students to give more time to the professional courses that supplement their degree tremendously. Courses like CA and CS with Law or a basic degree in Commerce are the most common ones. “CS will strengthen my resume and will also prepare me for the corporate world which lies ahead of me,” says Malek Shipchandler,a second year student at ILS Law college.

This year has also seen few takers for research based courses. Aviation, once considered as one of the most chosen courses and specifically air hostess training courses, seem to have climbed down the ladder with not many students taking them up. “The air hostess course bubble is bursting, not many are so keen as compared to the last two years,” adds Varghase. It’s the time for more job oriented courses riding the ladder. Also courses like psychology, animation, ethical hacking to name a few are the ones which are now attracting quite a few students.
