Doctors have felt the need for an upgrade in the field of medical genetics and a certificate course is being conducted in reproductive genetics at the Department of Genetics,Immunology and Biochemistry,Pune Regional centre of Maharashtra University of Health Science at Aundh.

The current medical curriculum does not have sufficient coverage of this important science and as a result the practicing doctors perceive the need to study genetics. The expertise regarding genetics exists in conventional universities but basic sciences people work on animal and plant genetics as they do not have much exposure to medical genetics.

To fill this lacuna the Department Of Genetics Biochemistry and Immunology,(MUHS) has started two foundation courses Certificate Course in Medical Genetics(CCMG),and Certificate Course in Reproductive Genetics(CCRG). CCMG is for general medical genetics while CCRG is targeted towards doctors and lab people working in the field of gynecology, obstetrics and infertility. The courses are held on weekends and are cocurricular for a duration of 6 months. The practicing doctors as well as students can therefore attend these courses.

Dr Prakash Gambhir, professor and head, department of Genetics,Immunology and Biochemistry,Pune regional centre of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, the department was started with the intention of bridging the gap between the ever expanding knowledge in genetic science and the actual use of this advances in the day-to-day practice by the medical practitioners.

Genetic disorders affect more than 3% of all newborns and 7 to 8 % of general population. Hence knowledge about genetics is a must for every practitioner and the senior practitioners should keep themselves updated regarding these new advances so that they can bring the fruits of genetics research to the needy common man, said Gambhir.

He said that the response to these courses are overwhelming and students not only from Pune and Mumbai are attending these courses but students from far off places like Hyderabad,Nanded,Vardha,Sangli and Yavatmal are coming for these courses. The second batch of CCMG and first batch of CCRG will be graduating this month.

Some of the students of these batches have already have a research publication to their credit, some are joining further education in genetics as well as few have registered for PhD in genetics.MBBS graduates aspiring for USMLE also find these courses enormously helpful in preparing for these exams.
