Pune rural police have booked assistant inspector Shashikant Chavan,in-charge of Narayangaon police station, for allegedly abetting the suicide of PAN card agent Kailas Chaskar on May 11.
Chaskar, arrested in February for allegedly helping a Bangladeshi national,Milon Mistry,in getting a fake PAN card, had allegedly committed suicide behind Narmada Hotel in Bhosari on May 11. His death was initially registered as accidental death at Bhosari police station. After his family complained of alleged harassment by police, police registered a complaint against Chavan.
Investigations earlier had revealed that Mistry, arrested from Narayangaon by the Anti Terrorist Cell of Pune police in February, had made suspicious calls to Pakistan and had procured a PAN card submitting fake documents with the help of Chaskar.
After he allegedly committed suicide,a group of 400 persons, including his family and relatives, brought his body to Narayangaon police station claiming he died after harassment by police.
Chaskars family wrote a complaint blaming Chavan for the suicide. Senior police officers rushed to the
spot and controlled the mob and assured them that the complaint will be viewed seriously.
Chavan, however, told media that Chaskar was arrested following strong evidence. Chavan said Chaskar had never complained of any harassment by police whenever he was produced in court.
Chavan claimed there was politics behind the offence registered against him.
Pratap Dighavkar, district superintendent of police, has ordered an inquiry,to be conducted by deputy superintendent of police B R Patil of Khed division, into the matter.
