Street play competition hosted by BMCC spreads message against female foeticide
The issue of female foeticide and saving the girl child that has been finding a mention in placards,Ganesh mandals and public and private fora was the central theme of a street play contest held on Thursday on BMCC campus.
More than 20 colleges from Pune district participated in the contest that was judged under five criteria, scripting, acting, innovation, presentation and social impact. What was remarkable was not only the presentation and performance, but the divergent means some teams took took to convey the message.
The Modern Law College teams play, for instance made use of sense of humour to spread the message against an issue as serious as female foeticide. We wanted to entertain as well as convey a social message, explained Ritesh Patil, one of the team members.
Students from Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering from Tathawade,on the other hand, portrayed a poignant tale to convey the message. We have always performed keeping the social context in mind. In fact, last year we had performed a dance based on a similar theme, says Priyanka Sonawane.
This is the first time that we have organised such an event, said Professor Rajendra Gurao,Head of the Statistics and Computer Application department. The event is part of the Kanyaratna Abhiyan,an initiative of the University of Pune to protect the interest of the girl child.
This is our first performance and in future we would like to participate in events like the Purushottam Karandak, said Darshan Rathi,a computer engineering student from DY Patil School of Engineering.
Sushma Kale,a third year student from B S Kale College of Arts and Commerce,Ghodegaon said,I feel happy to be part of this event and hope this will create the much-needed awareness about the issue,at least among the youth.
