Consultant bats for underground Metro

Terming the report of the proposed metro rail project in Pune a mere copy of the Delhi metro rail project as local conditions had not been considered, consultant of the Delhi as well as Bangalore Metro rail projects Kuldeep Singh said here that considering the geographic conditions of Pune,an underground Metro would be more suitable for the city.

Singh was speaking at an interaction function organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce,Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) on Saturday.

“Owing to the increasing population, there has been an increasing strain on the existing infrastructure facilities of the city. This has posed a challenge before the public transport system. As far as the Pune metro rail project is concerned,it has not been included in the master plan of the city and being treated as an unrelated project, which is not good,” he said adding,“The report prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Pune metro rail appears to be merely a copy of the Delhi metro project, except that a few maps of Pune marked in the report. However, other than that,it appears to be just an imitation of the original”

“Considering the geographic conditions of Pune, there is a need to implement an underground metro rather than constructing a route on the ground,as it will not prove a hindrance for other development projects on ground. However, the underground Metro is a more expensive alternative. For example, for a 30-km track, constructions of 30 stations are required and provision of other basic facilities is also important,” Singh added.

He said that before implementing such a huge project, people’s views needed to be checked. “People’s participation in such projects is important. Therefore, before heading to implement the project straightaway, people’s opinions should be taken into consideration. If people did not want the project, the crores of rupees spent on the project would go waste.”
