A Semen donor may not know that he has to donate his sperm at a registered semen bank and in the absence of any regulation, infertility clinics who have a sperm preservation facility are an option. While it is unethical to transfer more than three embryos in a mother’s womb due to complications, there is also a lack of awareness about the guidelines on assisted reproductive technology (ART) in the country.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had laid down guidelines on assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics in the country a couple of years ago. However, the absence of a legislation on the issue leads to unethical practices and doctors feel that awareness needs to be generated.

Dr Sanjeev Khurd, infertility specialist and president of the Pune Obstetric and Gynaecological Society, said,“We have decided to tackle this issue and organised a national conference on controversies in infertility.” The conference will be held in the city from October 30 – November 1.

About 500 super specialists in infertility and gynaecologists will participate in the conference. According to Khurd, the incidence of infertility is estimated to be more than 15 per cent of the eligible population. While there have been advances in the management infertility, there have been several controversies too.

The conference aims at deliberations over various aspects of infertility management and aims at giving evidence based guidelines to practising doctors. There are controversies regarding every aspect of infertility management be it ovulatory dysfunction, tubal disease, uterine anomalies or endoscopic surgeries. Among the several challenges in infertility management include improvement in live birth rates — the present day live birth rates are 25-35 per cent — and making IVF more safe and prevention of multiple pregnancies. There will be a live demonstration of the fertility enhancing endoscopic surgery at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital ,during a workshop on ‘Male and sexual dysfunction at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on October 30. The conference will be inaugurated by Dr CN Purandare, president,Federation of the Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India.
