Following the suicide incident of Sangameshwar Jadhav, the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) is contemplating covering diploma students admitted directly to second-year engineering course, under the ongoing mentoring programme started for its first-year students.
As a part of this programme,third-year students get attached to first-year students from respective disciplines so as to establish rapport with them and to help freshers in overcoming early difficulties in acclimatising and studying.
The death of a brilliant student like Sangameshwar came as shock for us. He was a merit holder diploma student. Most of diploma holders getting admitted into second-year directly find it difficult to pick up on some subjects, especially mathematics. This is due to their relatively weak foundation as most of them do not undertake Class 11 and 12 studies and opt for diploma course after Class 10. If brought under mentoring programme, these students would be able to acclimatise easily and could cope with early academic pressure easily, Sudhir Agashe, dean of student affairs at CoEP,said.
The college authorities also said that the delay every year in admitting diploma students into second year directly was one reason why these students come under stress. Every year, diploma holders get admitted into second-year almost 4-6 weeks after the start of first semester. After joining classes, these students find it difficult to catch up with the ongoing teaching. The cascading effect of this early set back often badly affects the academic progress of these students, Agashe said.
CoEP authorities said the State Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) should take note of the issue and modify admission schedules to ensure that diploma students admitted to second-year of engineering dont suffer for no fault of theirs. DTE authorities could not be reached for their comment.
