In the first such report on export strength of Pune,the Directorate General of Foreign trade (DGFT) has listed the city among major export hubs and has given the list of Top 10 exporters in terms of value of goods exported.
The report based on disclosures by companies and financial records points out that over 9,725 companies generate direct employment for 5,75,000 people. The report was prepared by DGFT officials in the city as part of the recent review by the Director General of Foreign Trade puts Bajaj Auto on top with an export of Rs 4,552 crore in 2011 fiscal followed by Bharat Forge Ltd with Rs 1,219 crore and Cummins India Ltd. with Rs 850 crore. Others in the Top 10 are Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd with Rs 650 crore,Thermax Ltd at Rs 552 crore,Sterlite Technologies Ltd at 527 crore,Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd at Rs 507 crore,Duplex Industries Ltd at Rs 357.5 crore,Jindal Saw Ltd at Rs 335 crore and ISMT ltd at Rs 310 crore.
The report aims at reviewing implementation of government schemes for export promotion and has given details of focus export products. It states the city houses some 1,200 food processing companies in the micro,small and medium enterprises sector,while heavy engineering and automobile industries are major players in the economic activity in the city. It further points out that among products listed in the export-import trade from Pune as well as other districts of the state are grapes,pomegranate,flower,yarn and fabrics.
Joint Director General of foreign trade,S Bala Subramanyam Reddy,said the report was part of the review by Director General Foreign Trade on his visit to the city in January.
Companies take benefit of many central schemes under which there are concessions on import duties on certain product ranges with obligation of exports, he said.
On being on the top of the list of exporters,Senior VP,Bajaj Auto,S Ravikumar,said the company will retain the number 1 position this year as well. In terms of exports Africa is the market which has been in our focus. Apart from traditional markets of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka the Central and Latin American markets have seen a growth. Nearly 35 per cent of our two-wheelers are exported whereas over half of the three-wheelers are exported, he said.
