Considering the enormous delay in giving compensation to accident victims, the Pune Bar Association (PBA) handed over a memorandum to Judge Abhay Oak,demanding to set up a Motor Accident Claim Tribunal in Pune.
After the provision of giving compensation to accident victims was made in 1990,it was stated that a Maharashtra State Motor Accident Relief Cell be formed in Pune along with five other cities in the state. Even after two decades, this cell is yet to be formed,” said advocate Milind Pawar, president of PBA.
In the absence of this cell, all cases of motor accident compensation claims are being heard by the district judge. “Since the district judge has various civil and criminal cases pending, such claims take a backseat and get prolonged,” Pawar said.
Considering the huge pendency of such claims in the Pune district court, the Bar Association has requested an Motor Accident Claim Tribunal with an independent bench of four judges to hear only these cases.
