City-based Akashdeep Gandharva and Rajsingh Nimbalkar recently organised a collection drive to send clothes for flood victims in Uttarakhand

When floods devastated the state of Uttarakhand, two fresh college graduates in the city were among those overcome with grief. Graphic images flashed on the television and newspapers reported about those who lost their lives and those who were left behind with nothing in hand. Akashdeep Gandharva and Rajsingh Nimbalkar,co-owners of a company called Rattle, knew they had to do something even though they felt inadequate in being able to provide food or shelter.

Mulling over the matter, they realised that the victims also needed clothes and they decided to widen their networks, upload posts on social networking sites, talk to family members and friends and also organise a collection drive for clothes.

“So many people were rendered homeless; food is also hard to get but we can hardly do anything to help on those fronts. But when we got down to thinking about it,we realised that we could help the victims with clothes. That’s how we spread the word and asked people to come and donate clothes for the Uttarakhand victims,” says 23-year-old Nimbalkar. He shares that some students who got to know about the drive volunteered to host a similar collection drive in their colleges and brought the collection to their office at Bhandarkar Road. But Nimbalkar and Gandharva weren’t satisfied with their efforts,so they devised another idea.

“During last week,we announced that whatever number of t-shirts we sell,we will donate twice as much from our side for the collection drive. It worked two ways — our customers knew they were buying for a worthy cause and we also had a sense of satisfaction about manufacturing more clothes to be sent to Uttarakhand,” says 22-year-old Gandharva.

The duo managed to bag orders for 71 t-shirts over the week and as promised, they manufactured 142 more t-shirts and shipped it to a charity house in Delhi that would ensure it reaches the affected people in Uttarakhand.

Gandharva says they are living up to the purpose of their company, which was started in the beginning of 2013. He shares that they were still in college when they first desired to pursue social work as a vocation. “Teaching underprivileged children and organising events to raise funds for NGOs as part of the Youth Unesco Forum,we developed an inclination towards helping people. There was, however, one problem – we did not want to go door-to-door asking for funds. It was just not our cup of tea,” says Nimbalkar. Thinking of the various avenues they could explore, the two decided to start a business that would fund their charity work. That is how they started the company Rattle, which produces eco-friendly merchandise for corporate houses, soon after the two finished college.

After the collection drive for Uttarakhand, the duo plans to organise another drive on similar lines for the victims of the floods in Assam.
