Despite efforts by Pune Police to curb chain-snatching cases,three incidents of chain-snatching were reported on Friday.
In the first incident,Ashok Sopan Tapkir,64,a resident of Shivaji Housing Society,was robbed of a gold chain weighing 45 gm worth Rs 65,000 by two unidentified men. Tapkir was resting in front his residence when two bike-borne youth
approached him on the pretext of asking directions. As he suffers from hearing impairment,
Tapkir went near the bike.
The suspects snatched the gold chain he was wearing
and fled, inspector SB Navale of Chatushringi Police Station said.
The second incident took place in Sahakar Nagar where two youths on a bike targeted Anuradha Anant Desai,63,of Hilltop Society,Dhankawadi when she was taking a walk. The suspects took away her mangalsutra worth Rs 14,000.
In the third incident,Jaya Naraina,54,was robbed by unidentified suspects near Rajhans Housing Society in Chinchwad. She was robbed of her gold locket weighing 22 gm estimated worth Rs 44,000.
Rajesh Bansode,deputy commissioner of police (crime),said,Special teams have been formed for the four zones with each comprising an officer and 10 constables. A dedicated anti-chain-snatching squad of the crime branch is also working to keep these cases in check. We are hoping to get a breakthrough soon.The city has witnessed a spurt in such crimes with 90 cases registered by February this year alone. In 2011,294 cases were registered of which 179 were cracked.
Five chain-snatching incidents were reported on Wednesday as well in the city.
