Centre’s move to honour Tendulkar lauded by all

The news of Tendulkar being conferred the honour drew widespread acclaim. Former Indian captain,Chandu Borde,said,“A couple of years ago,I was the first person to sign on a signature campaign asking for Tendulkar to be bestowed with this award. I am happy that the government has finally honoured him.”

Borde said he believed that by awarding the Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar,the government has recognized the popularity and the impact of cricket as a sport on the national conciousness. “Sachin was with me when we toured Pakistan in 1989 as a young member of the side. From that time on,he has not changed. His hunger for runs,his attitude and his respectful demeanour have been intact. He is a great inspiration to the nation and to the youth,” he said.

Former Davis Cupper and erstwhile coach of the Indian Davis Cup team,Nandan Bal,said award to Tendulkar has greater significance. “This award means that the government has recognized the contribution of sport to society. Also,there is a chance that athletes who achieve the kind of excellence similar to Tendulkar in their chosen sport,also have a chance to be feted,” he said.

Bal said the award was conferred not only for the excellence he displayed on the field,but also for his humility and conduct over the years.

“I like many millions of people had tears in my eyes when I watched him bid farewell at the Wankhede Stadium. His speech,where he thanked so many people,shows the humility and the grace with which he carries himself. I think this award has been given to Tendulkar the person as much as for Tendulkar the batsman,” he said.

Kishor Pate,whose realty business has Tendulkar as its face,said his company was privileged to have someone of Tendulkar’s stature as a brand ambassador.
