Census duty to hit work at UoP

The census work that started again on Sunday could leave the University of Pune crippled for the next one-and-a-half-month,with as many as 383 non-teaching staff to be sent on census duty that will continue up to November 15.

The census work that started again on Sunday could leave the University of Pune crippled for the next one-and-a-half-month,with as many as 383 non-teaching staff to be sent on census duty that will continue up to November 15.

According to a senior official, the staff had to go through a two-day training programme before being sent on census duty. “It is going to be difficult for the university to function efficiently with 383 people being pulled out of regular work for census duty. All administration work will almost come to a standstill,” he said.

The official said,“We have a total of 1,100 posts of which 300 are vacant. Of the remaining staff, more than half are being taken for census work. The work of the university will suffer for 48 days.”

The university registrar, however, said that till September 30,they had received orders for only 100 people to be sent on census duty. “Till Friday,we received orders to send 100 of our staff. Since it was a holiday today, the work was on hold. In the coming few days, more orders will be passed, thereby taking up the number of people to be sent for the work. It is going to be very difficult for us,” said registrar M L Jadhav.

Asked if there is a way out,Jadhav said,“There is no solution to this problem. Work has already been allotted to people by the government. We were thinking of hiring people on contract for the two months but decided against it since it will take the new-comers almost two months to understand the working of the system. A lot of work will be stalled for the coming two months here.”
