Cellphone with SIM found in Yerawada jail,probe begins

The Jail Department has launched a probe after a cell phone was found on the ground in Yerawada Central jail on Friday afternoon

The Jail Department has launched a probe after a cell phone was found on the ground in Yerawada Central jail on Friday afternoon. The prison officials said the phone had a SIM card and calls were made from it.

Some of the prison staffers found a cell phone lying on the ground in the open space in the backyard of the Circle 3 of the jail during a routine search of the jail premises. Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai said,“We have started questioning the inmates. The phone was on and it has a SIM card. We have also started checking which numbers were dialed and to whom does the SIM card belong.”

A few days ago jail authorities had recovered marijuana while it was being taken into the prison. As per the prison manual,cell phones,outside cash and drugs are banned in the jail. Desai said,“We have installed a cell network jammer for one of the circles in the jail. The provision for jammers for other barracks is being made.”

In another recent incident that had raised question mark on the security in the Yerawada prison Yogesh Raut,a prime accused in the gang rape and murder of software techie,who was re-arrested on May 31 after being on the run for about 20 months,said in his statement that he gave money to the doctors at Yerwada jail through another convict for getting a false certificate saying he was ill and needed admission to Sassoon General Hospital for treatment.

Meeran Borwankar,ADGP (prisons),had said that the jail department had sought a report from the Pune police in this matter.
