This is how the entry for Himayat Baig reads in the academic register at D Ed College on Azam Campus. Baig was a student there between 2003 and 2005.

“We have no clue what students do after passing out from the college, but during his academic years,he seems to have done nothing objectionable,” said H Y Kumbhar, primary teacher in the Government School located in the same building. He is one of the oldest teachers on the campus.

As per the records of the register,Baig, entry number 711,took admission to D Ed first year on November 10,2003,following an admission procedure under SCERT,District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET). It mentions his date of birth as January 3,1980,and place of birth as Beed.

Other entries include his father’s name as Mirza Inayat Baig, religion as Islam, nationality as Indian, and “paying student”. The register mentions that on May 11,2005,Baig passed out. He collected the College Leaving Certificate; the register records “received”.

Not one staff member remembers Baig,or has a clue where he went after completing his course or whether he ever visited the campus since.

“We train 60 students every year,30 in first year and 30 in second year, and it is difficult to remember each by his or her face. However,if a students after finishing a course remains in Pune, then we happen to meet them. With outstation students there is no way we can keep in touch,” said R U Shadiwan,college-in-charge.
