Dabbawalas in Mumbai are well-known across the country and the world and are even admired by Britain’s Prince Charles and industrialist Sir Richard Branson for their skillful business management.

Dabbawalas in Mumbai are well-known across the country and the world and are even admired by Britain’s Prince Charles and industrialist Sir Richard Branson for their skillful business management. Two students from MIT Institute of Design,Nikita Chonkar and Bhargavi Joglekar decided to study the Dabbawalas operational system. They analytically studied all the steps — right from picking up the tiffins from the collection points upto the delivery, and found alternatives for the problems involved. They developed equipment in the form of a jacket, which can carry 35 tiffins at a time. The equipment was put to test. Based on the feedback received from tiffin suppliers, the equipment was fine tuned further. The final design was awarded the first prize at Pune Design Festival 2013. The project was guided by professors Dhimant Panchal and Amit Deshmukh from MIT Institute of Design.
