Bluetooth-enabled chair, smart lock with ultrasonic sensors: Pune hackathon for students celebrates future engineers

Over 23,000 students in classes 4 to 8 from 890 schools across Maharashtra participated in the hackathon in Pune, using their creativity to help solve real-world problems.

A Bluetooth-enabled chair for patients with disabilities and a smart lock with ultrasonic sensors were among the winning ideas presented by school students at the state-level hackathon hosted by Amazon India’s Future Engineer Programme in Pune on Saturday.

Over 23,000 students in classes 4 to 8 from 890 schools across Maharashtra participated in the hackathon, presenting their creativity and talent to help solve real-world problems.

The team from Zilla Parishad Primary School Shindephal, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar claimed the top prize with their ‘Smart Chair’ project which uses a Bluetooth connection to help patients with disabilities control a chair’s movements using a mobile device.

Students from the Zilla Parishad Primary School Vidya Mandir Tirpan, Kolhapur bagged the second prize with a ‘Smart and Safe Lock’ that offers enhanced security features and an innovative method to protect valuables by using ultrasonic sensors and coding algorithms. The team from Zilla Parishad Primary School Gulvanchi, Solapur bagged the third prize. In fact, the top five spots went to Zilla Parishad school teams from various districts.

Government representatives and Amazon officials said the event provided a great opportunity for students to gain practical coding and robotics skills through workshops and group projects. The state-level event saw the participation of schools from several districts including Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Nashik, Nagpur, Pune, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Satara and Solapur.
