BJP workers from Pimpri-Chinchwad have filed a complaint against Marathi Sahitya Samelan president Shripal Sabnis for a controversial statement he had made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Amar Sable even went to the extent of saying that Sabnis’s effigy would be paraded on a donkey for his remarks.

Pune police have already provided Sabnis armed police security after he allegedly received threats from BJP workers over his remarks during a programme at a college in Nagpur.

On Wednesday, some BJP workers from Pimpri-Chinchwad filed a complaint application in Nigdi police station. Senior inspector Sanjay Naikpatil of Nigdi police station said, “We have received an application and after the primary probe, a non-cognisable offence may be registered. But as of now, I can only say that we are looking into it.”

BJP’s member of parliament in Rajya Sabha, Amar Sable, said, “We will intensify our protest against the derogatory statement Sabnis has made against our national leader. We have already burnt his effigy. Now we will parade his effigy on a donkey. We would register complaints against him in other places too.”

Sanjiv Punalekar, a lawyer representing arrested Sanatan Sanstha member in the Pansare murder case, tweeted, “Tumhi sakali morning walk la ja, Shripal Sabnis. (Go for a morning walk, Shripal Sabnis).”

Though Punalekar denied the statement being a threat, Sabnis had called it a serious threat as rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare were murdered while on a morning walk.
