Bangladesh citizen gets two-yr term for cheating

The Khadki cantonment court sentenced a Bangladeshi national to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for cheating a Pune-based businessman of Rs 5 lakh.

The Khadki cantonment court sentenced a Bangladeshi national to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for cheating a Pune-based businessman of Rs 5 lakh.

Maulana Musafizur Rehman Sayyad (29),a native of Bangaldesh,was arrested by the special operations wing (SOW) of Pune Police on June 14,2009,for illegally staying in India. He was residing at a masjid at Yerwada. The police complaint against him was registered at the Yerwada police station.

The police team comprising inspector Rajendra Joshi,naik Sharad Dedge,constables Sudhir Ingle,Ganesh Gaikwad,Kunal Shinde and other seized a passport,a fake pan card and other bogus documents from Sayyad’s possession. The police team also arrested two more maulanas,one hailing from Bangladesh and another a native of Myanmar,who were illegally staying in the country and involved in forgery racket.

During investigations,Sayyad admitted to cheating Noor Mohammed Amin Shaikh,a car spare parts dealer,residing at Jayshankar Housing Society in Sapras.

Police said that Shaikh first met Sayyad at a masjid in Ghorpadi area,where maulanas from different parts of country had gathered for a meeting in 2007. Sayyad told Shaikh that he was a Mufti at a masjid in Mysore. Sayyad demanded a donation of Rs 5 lakh from Shaikh for construction of a madrassa in Mysore.

Sayyad said that he would lay a stone with Shaikh’s name on a wall of this madrassa. So Shaikh handed over two cheques,each of Rs 1 lakh amount,to Sayyad.

After six months,Sayyad again came to Pune and approached Shaikh saying that he needed Rs 2.4 lakh more construction of madrassa. Shaikh again gave him a cash of Rs 1 lakh and a cheque of Rs 2 lakh for the purpose. Sayyad however purchased gold jewellery with this money.

After the case came to light,Shaikh lodged a complaint against Sayyad at the Vishrantwadi police station. The Vishrantwadi police booked him under section 406 and 420 of Indian Penal Code. Police also seized the ornament he had purchased from the money taken from Shaikh.

Public prosecutor B N Kadam said that they examined six witnesses in this case. “The evidence collected against the accused was sufficient to prove his involvement in the crime,” said Kadam. Judicial Magistrate (first class) Siddharth Salve today sentenced Shaikh to rigorous imprisonment for two years and fine of Rs 10,000. Police sources said that Sayyad claimed that he was a maulana and used pamphlet of a madrassa in Mysore for cheating people.
