With an aim to enhance safety and modernise railway operations, an Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) system was commissioned between Chinchwad and Khadki stations in the Lonavala-Pune section of the Pune division on August 20.

A section of about 10 km was finished as part of the block completion. Currently, work on this system has been undertaken for a longer stretch, covering 54.35 km from Lonavala to Khadki.

The Central Railway initiated the project, covering a total distance of 60.59km, extending from Lonavala to Pune. A railway official said the remaining section of around 6km from Khadki to Pune will be expanded in the next three months. Divisional Commercial Manager of Pune Division Ramdas Bhise said the automatic signaling system is used to increase the capacity of the section, which is installed at a distance of every one kilometer.

Auxiliary Warning System (AWS) equipped under the track lines and trains ensures the safe speed of trains at each of these signals.

“Currently, within an absolute block system, once a train enters a specific block section, no other train can access that same section until the preceding train clears the home signal of the next station. It helps to maintain a block overlapping distance of 180 metres ahead of that home signal. This limitation can reduce the line’s capacity, especially when multiple trains are traveling in the same direction, resulting in train bunching and delays,” said Bhise.
