Smitha Madhav feels that there is a lot of room for innovation in the creative field these days

At an age when people usually start their careers or experiment with various professions, she already has numerous achievements to her credit and a well etched out career in front of her. 25-year-old Smitha Madhav,is a trained carnatic music vocalist and Bharatnatyam dancer. Chennai-based,Madhav will be giving her very first performance in the city at Bharati Vidya Bhavan Hall, off Senapati Bapat Road,on March 14. Accompanying her will be Melakkaveri Thiyagarajan on violin and Nellai A Balaji on the Mridangam.

“More than achievement, its my passion. But yes,it certainly feels good when you get recognition and your efforts are acknowledged,” says Madhav, who has been performing since the age of four and till date has presented various performances across the world that include places like Singapore,Indonesia,Australia and the USA to name a few.

Having performed in various parts of the world, she feels that since the past few years, people’s mind have opened towards different forms of art and music. She says,“There is a lot of room for new thinking and innovation. People with different genre of music are working together, which is great.” However,Madhav feels that due to mixing, sometimes the art form loses its purity and standard.

Besides dance and music, is also a gold medallist in law. On pursuing a career in the same, she says,“Though I loved the subject and enjoyed studying it,I can’t see myself making a career in it. It is a time-consuming profession. Moreover, more than yourself, you are responsible for someone else’s life, which is a great responsibility.”

Many a times she is questioned on her preference of the two art forms – dance and music. “I do not treat them differently; they are like two arms of the body. They compliment each other and one is incomplete without the other. I put my heart and soul equally to both dance as well as music,” she explains.

Having heard and read a lot about the city’s inclination towards art and culture,Madhav is very excited about her performance in the cultural capital of the state. She feels that when the audience has got good taste and knowledge of dance and music,it creates a positive pressure on the performer to give the best.

Having achieved so much at such a young age,on her future plans, she says,“I do not set my goals in terms of reaching certain level or comparing myself with someone else. Because,I believe this way,you lose focus from giving complete devotion to your performance,” she concludes.
