Couple gets bail in jewellery theft case

MNC employee Akshay Gupta and his MBA wife Geetika,who allegedly stole jewellery from P N Gadgil Jewellers and Tanishq in Camp,were released on bail by a magistrate court on Wednesday. The couple was released against a personal bond of Rs 15,000 each and remanded in judicial custody till August 16. The police have seized the car in which they had gone to the jewellery shops.

The couple was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing ornaments worth Rs 3.25 lakh. Police said Gupta has a degree in instrumentation engineering and earns a hefty salary of Rs 1.5 lakh per month,while his wife Geetika is an MBA graduate and housewife. Suresh Kekane,police inspector (unit II) of the crime branch,on Monday,confirmed that Gupta worked with a bank in Hinjewadi area. According to the CCTV footage,on June 23,the couple had entered the shop as customers and kept the salesperson busy on the pretext of choosing an ornament for Geetika. In the meantime,Gupta opened a drawer and stole the ornaments.

2 killed in Khalapur road accident

Two persons were killed and four injured when two cars collided at Khalapur on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway on Tuesday night. The deceased are Badshah Ramsiya Kusawa (32),owner of the Rohit Panipuri Centre at Bhakti Shakti chowk and Balaji Chat Centre in Nigdi,and Jitendra alias Tillu Gupta (37),owner of the Yash Snacks Centre in Akurdi. Those injured have been identified as Bhiam Sarode,Dashrath More,Ajay Gupta and Suddesh Salegaonkar. Police said the victims were returning from Mumbai in a car on Tuesday night. Driver of the car,Kusawa,lost control of the car while trying to avoid a collision with a petrol tanker that was coming from the opposite side. The car lost its course and a vehicle coming from back crashed into it. Kusawa and Gupta died on the spot while injured were admitted to hospital in Panvel.
