The work for estimation of loss due to the floods and rain in the city earlier this week has almost been completed. Speaking to The Indian Express, District Collector Suhas Diwase said the panchnama work is being done on war footing and is almost 95 percent complete.
Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations, the Zilla Parishad and the revenue department are conducting the work of loss estimation. Based on the work, the total loss would be estimated and compensation would be fixed.
Since Wednesday morning, torrential rains have battered Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad and other parts of Pune district. This has led to flooding as water was discharged from the dams in the morning. Low-lying areas of Pune city like Sinhagad Road, Sahakarnagar, Ambegaon Budruk, Uttam Nagar, Omkareshwar Temple were badly affected due waterlogging and flooding. The PMC and the state government had drawn flak from citizens and opposition parties.
The PMC established temporary shelters in 26 areas in the city along with public representatives distributing blankets, plastic buckets, etc. to the displaced people.
Given the risk of spreading infectious diseases, the corporations and state government officials have taken up the work of debris removal and spraying disinfectants in all affected parts. Special drives have been taken up to clean up the debris accumulated at the affected areas and concerned houses.
Meanwhile, the irrigation department has issued warnings about discharge of water from Khadakwasla and the Pavana dam.
In a press statement issued late on Sunday, the department said that as most of the dams in Pune district are almost full, they would have to discharge the water. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rain for Sunday and Monday morning. The irrigation department has asked citizens to keep away from river beds for their safety.
