The newly open restaurant,Café Zaatar, offers much more than Arabian ambience, that is,authentic Arabian food

While Arabian music and dance is fairly popular among the youth and while the city plays home to many students and professionals from Middle East, hardly a few restaurants in the city offer authentic Arabian food. Thinking from both a connoisseurs and a foodie point of view,Rachna Punjabi, restaurateur, along with Raza Sayyed and Ahmed Yalvya, both restaurateurs bring some homely environ for the guests from Middle Eastern and a different experience for others with their newly opened restaurant Café Zaatar. Located in prime and posh location of Kalyani Nagar,Café Zaatar is exclusively dedicated to Arabian food, which is offered in an Arabian ambience,in terms of music, lighting and décor.

“Zaatar is a blend of herbs, sesame seeds and salt and has been a part of Arabian cuisine since Medieval times. Now with the growing inter-cultural exchange, people are exposed to different pallets. While Indian and oriental cuisine was much popular,Puneites did not get much choice when it came to Middle Eastern cuisine, hence this café. However, this is just the beginning and we plan to get more for exotic and common Middle Eastern dishes for people. My partners in the business,Raza and Ahmed are from United Arab Emirates and have given valuable inputs about the taste and authenticity of the food,” says Punjabi.

The restaurant serves zaatar (Rs 60),a preparation of bread with mixture of herbs and spices on it. Among other Arabian items is Falafel (a bread stuffed with cutlet and salad or lettuce leaves) (Rs 70). In Arabian Dajaj means chicken,so we have Shwarma Dajaj (Rs 80),Dajaj burger (Rs 90) and Dajaj club (Rs 100),which though sounds familiar but is prepared with Arabian spices. The ambience with shamianas and Arabina music adds to the flavour.

“While we get most of the ingredients here, but we are also importing spices from UAE to maintain the authenticity of the food. The restaurant is open from 11 am to 7.30 in the evening,” says Sayyed. Zaatar tea (Rs 50) is also being offered among a range of tea.

The restaurant also offers a range of desserts like Bakhlava and Shukulat bomb, which is sinfully rich in chocolate with liquid chocolate bursting out of the crust. It specialises in types of bread. “Because there is an extensive use of fine floor,we also offer, brown bread and multi grain bread to keep it healthy,” adds Punjabi.
