After Fergusson College becoming the first aided college in Pune to get autonomy by the University Grants Commission last week, now GH Raisoni College of Engineering and Management has been granted autonomy for a period of six years, making it the fifth engineering college in the city to get autonomous status.
Making the announcement on Wednesday, the institute management said that they would now offer B.Tech and M.Tech degrees to its students. While the institute would remain affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), it would now have the power to design its own curriculum for B.Tech and M.Tech. The autonomy has been granted for the period of academic years 2016-17 to 2022-23.
Dr RS Bichkar, in-charge director of GHRCEM, Wagholi, said that the institute got autonomy in merely 10 years making it one of the ‘youngest’ colleges to achieve the status. “Autonomy would now lessen our dependency on SPPU, and besides designing courses according to the latest technology and industrial needs, we’ll be able to provide better job placement opportunities to our students,” he added.

Adding that autonomy would give them the authority to design multi-disciplinary courses according to industry trends, the management said that it would bring along freedom to design innovative methods of teaching, evaluation, frequent updates to the syllabus and so on. The institute has established an independent board of studies committee for designing curriculum and examination pattern.
Ajit Tatiya, trustee director, Raisoni Group of Institutes, said, “The faculty and students would now be able to conduct high quality research that would help our nation in the future. Autonomous colleges are the need of the hour.” However, authorities were quick to add that though GHRCEM is the fifth autonomous engineering college in the city, both B.Tech and M.Tech degrees awarded by the institute would be affiliated to SPPU with a mention of GHRCEM on the degree certificate.
