After the Pune Nagrik Sangathana (PNS),an organisation of 14 political parties announced plans to contest the PMC polls,a group of left and parties with left leanings parties along with several NGOs working in different fields have floated a similar group, the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Nagri Vikas Aghadi (BVNVA),claiming that it would offer clean candidates.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist),Communist Party of India,Janata Dal (Secular),Lokbharati,Socialist Party (India),Shetkari Kamgar Paksha,Samajwadi Party,Dalit Swanyasevak Sangh,Bhrashtachar Nirmulan Sangharsh Trust,Satyashodhak Shetkari Shramik Sangh and National Alliance of People’s Movements have joined hands to float the organisation.

“Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption got a huge support from people across country. We need to cleanse our city of corruption desperately but no political party, neither the Congress-NCP nor the Sena-BJP-MNS,has the will to do so. Left parties have been blamed for many things by leaders like Mamata Banerjee, but they have never been blamed for corruption. We have joined hands with many NGOs,” said Ajit Abhyankar, the CPM district secretary.

Left leaning political parties are believed to have shown interest in joining the PNS but that didn’t work out as PNS was not willing to tie-up with any political party.

“We have an agenda similar to that of the PNS and wherever needed will work in co-ordination. They wanted to keep political parties out of their Sanghatana and we believe little can be achieved in elections by keeping out political parties,” said Abhyankar.

When it was pointed out that many such alliances have failed in the past,BVNVA members expressed confidence that after Hazare’s movements things have changed. Shanta Ranade of the CPI said,“Who could have predicted that Hazare’s movement will get such an enormous support? We are hopeful of getting good support this time as people are looking for candidates with a clean image.
