All-new GPO to be inaugurated today

For SB Pardeshi,a class IV employee who has been working in the canteen of the General Post Office (GPO) since 1975,the renovation of the building is nothing short of a festival.

With tiles, cushy furniture,a touch of red in the décor, vibrant uniforms for the staff and a flamboyant new logo, the post office has undergone a complete makeover — thanks to Project Arrow, launched by former minister of state for communication and information technology,Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Despite the fact that the office is in a mess— sacks of cement and cartons of other goods lie scattered — there are no complaints. Instead, there is excitement all around,as every employee has waited for Tuesday, when the GPO will be re-inaugurated in its all-new avatar.

SC Jarodia, postmaster general,Pune region, said,“Project Arrow is not only about the look and feel change, but also brings qualitative changes. Apart from a facelift in terms of branding, latest technologies, uniforms for staff and training staff on use of various software and soft skills, the focus will also be on improving the core operations area. Under the project,a citizen charter has been designed to give all the information about process and time to the public. Prompt collection of mail from the latter boxes and a prompter dispatch will be ensured. Post offices in rural areas will have the e-enabled services.” Jarodia is hopeful that after full implementation of Project Arrow, the Indian Postal service will be a more convenient option than private courier services.

Sudesh Gaikwad,GPO staff, said,“We don’t mind the mess,as we know that the end result is good. We feel proud to be associated with the brand that not only maintains a standard at par with big companies, but also serves the common man. It will be interesting to see GPO that is also a heritage building,in its new look.”

MD Lahane, who has been in the postal service for 25 years, says,“This is the first major makeover and I am thrilled. There will be more professionalism and the work culture will improve. The environment in itself is a boost. I have seen photographs of the post offices of Shivajinagar and Chinchwad East¿ today,my office is also looking world-class.”
