Ragging Case : Inquiry committee seeks more time to submit report

The Ahmednagar police on Friday recorded the statement of vice-chairman of the governing body of Deccan Education Society (DES) and other senior members of the management in connection with the case of ragging of its second-year law college student Prashant Chitalkar who committed suicide in Ahmednagar on Sunday.

This came a day after the Deccan Gymkhana police station sent the case papers back to the Ahmednagar police, saying they will only assist in the investigation process and not conduct it themselves.

The police team from Rahuri held a closed-door meeting with the DES management from 11 am to 4.30 pm. Later, they carried out investigations in the college hostel till late evening.

M M Bagwan, police inspector,Rahuri police station, said,“We sent a team led by police sub inspector Isamuddin Pathan to DES on Friday for investigations in the Chitalkar suicide case. They will take statements of people connected with the case, the four college students who have been named in the complaint registered by Prashant’s father Bandopant Chitalkar and other college students.”

Bagwan said Prashant’s father in his complaint had named four DES Law College students who were allegedly involved in ragging his son — Sudarshan Shelke,Chetan Mahale,Sharad Bande and Rohan Belambe. Pathan said,“We have taken statements of 12 people and the investigation is on. The four boys named in the complaint are missing; a police team would be constituted to search for them.”

Meanwhile, the fact-finding committee set up on Wednesday by the DES Law College to look into the ragging case asked for more time to talk to some more people before preparing its report. The committee was supposed to submit its report today. Vikas Kakatkar, chairman of local management committee, confirmed the receipt of such a request and said the management has agreed to give it more time; no specific deadline has been fixed though.
