After defence authorities raised objections to the construction of a railway overbridge at Ghorpuri, the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) will look for another site for overbridge which is expected to ease the frequent traffic snarls in the area.
The matter came up for discussion at the cantonment board meeting held on Monday after a letter was received by PCB from the office of Principal Director (PD),Defence Estates, seeking views of the board on the proposal for construction of the overhead bridge. The alternative site will be suggested by the cantonment board members in 10 days.
At the meeting, board members said construction of the railway overbridge was important to tackle the problem of traffic jams in Ghorpuri.
PCB member Santosh Kavade said commuters were facing inconveniences owing to the delay in the construction of the overbridge. The issue has been pending for nearly three years,he added.
PCB vice-president Karan Makwani said the matter had been referred to the board earlier too. Nominated members of the cantonment board said the construction of the bridge at the present site will lead to displacement of the residents. However,Kavade said the Pune Municipal Corporation was ready to pay compensation in this regard and has agreed to spend over Rs 70 crore for the construction of the bridge.
