If your food fantasies are cooked up by expert chefs based in Deutschland, take heart,as Pune is set to play host to a comprehensive German Food Festival for a whole fortnight. Beginning May 17,Hotel Deccan Rendezvous on Apte Road,in association with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and the Max Mueller Bhawan, will organise the German Food Fest, with over 30 dishes to choose from.

“The fest will offer traditional German food prepared with conventional recipes. All the ingredients, including sausages and meat, have been especially imported to ensure that connoisseurs get to enjoy the most authentic German cuisine,” says Ravish Arora, director,Inn Venue Hospitality Management Pvt Ltd,the company that manages Deccan Rendezvous.

“The hotel’s Glass Window Restaurant will have a special theme décor for the duration of the festival. We’ll make extensive use of colours of the German flag and have posters of well-known German personalities like Albert Einstein,Boris Becker,Sigmund Freud,Steffi Graf and Ludwig van Beethoven,” informs Mayur Deodhar, operations manager,Deccan Rendezvous.

The menu, succinct yet all-inclusive,has been prepared to offer guests an exact idea of German cuisine. “About 80 per cent of the menu is made up of traditional recipes and it’s only with the remaining 20 per cent that we’ve added new recipes to suit the Indian palatte,” adds Arora. “Since bread and sausages make up a large part of German food, there are 600-700 varieties of bread and 500-600 types of sausages available there. We’ve tried to keep the menu and ingredients as close to the original as possible,” he says.

From starters, salads, soups, main course and desserts, there’s something for everyone here. Sample the Bibeleskas (Soft cottage cheese and sour cream dip flavoured with fresh herbs and served with warm rye bread) or the Gurken Gefullt (Green cucumbers stuffed with asparagus and herbs) among the starters or try out the unusual Sorbische Biersuppe (Traditional German beer soup) to work up an appetite.

“For the main course and the starters,we’ve used authentic German ingredients and most of them have been imported. In the main course, trying the Bockwurst Mit Sauerkraut (Grilled Bockwurst sausages with sauerkraut) or the Bratwurst-Pfanne (Rhine-style grilled sausages with pan fried potatoes and vegetables) is a good idea. For vegetarians, though the choices are limited in German cuisine, there’s a choice of a very delectable Hausgemachte Maultaschen (Ravioli filled with spinach in tomato sauce and gratinated) and Stangenspargel Mit Sauce Hollandaise (Asparagus stewed in wine and butter, topped with Hollandaise sauce and gratinated),” recommends Arora.

And to finish off the meal in style, take your pick from the range of desserts, totally German in taste and presentation, available here — Hausgemachter Apfelstrudel (Homemade apple strudel with vanilla sauce),Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte (Blackberry Cherry Torte),Kasekuchen (Baked cheesecake with quark and kirsch soaked raisins) or Kaiserschmarrn Mit Zwetschgenkompott (Sweet raisin omelette with plum compote).
