Veteran actor Achala Sachdev who is as famous as the song dedicated to her,Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen,in her film Waqt (1965),with Balraj Sahni, tilts her head to smile feebly every time a visitor comes to her ward at the Poona Hospital,to which she was admitted on December 22.
Pale because of advanced age and off-and-on hospitalisation since September last year,Sachdev remains strong in her will to fight quadriplegia, chronic asthma and blindness.
Sachdev enjoys having visitors and small talk with them,in spite of her partial hearing. I keep talking to her in Punjabi all day long. It keeps her mind off the pain that is caused from her therapy sessions and the trauma of being in hospital for such a long time, said Sarlesh Tyagi,Sachdevs attendant at the hospital. She prefers to introduce herself as a fan of the veteran actor. When Tyagi goes near Sachdevs and says I love you into her ear,one might think it would disturb the patient, but Sachdevs face lights up as she promptly replies,I love you too.
The total cost of her treatment since September 9,when she was hospitalised for a fracture in the femur due to a fall in the bathroom of her residence, has been over four lakh rupees, said Dr Shah.
But since Sachdev had done a lot of good work in the past, and made a lot of donations and grants to the Janseva Foundation in Pune, they take responsibility of her medical expenditure, he added.
