The reported hacking of salary accounts of several Mumbai policemen in Axis Bank resulted in panic among people who have accounts in the bank. They rushed to ATMs to check their money.

A report in a Marathi daily said salary accounts of several Mumbai policemen were hacked and money was found withdrawn from the accounts. The report was aired on some TV channels,too.

“We got to know about this from news channels in the morning. The firm I work with has salary accounts in Axis Bank. During the morning hours the online banking system was also not functioning properly. As news of the hacking spread,almost all my colleagues rushed to ATMs and withdrew money,” said a journalist with a publishing house.

A bank official said a few panicked customers approached some of their branches but they returned after they were reassured that their money was safe.

The hacking had reportedly taken place in April and May.
