Even as Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan remained undecided on the Aadhaar drive in residential societies, officials on Wednesday indicated that the drive would be rolled out in societies from next year. The move is aimed at increasing the percentage of enrollments in the state.
Besides promoting the importance of Aadhaar card, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIAD) has planned new manuals, dramas and street plays to reach out to people. The new initiatives include an SMS alert system and issue of UID card within a month of applying.
Deputy Director General Dr Ajay Bhushan Pandey told Newsline that the drive is slowly picking up and the country has till date generated nearly 8.2 crore UID cards. We are slowly picking up pace and we want to cover the rural populace first. New initiatives will be planned out soon. At present, the state has covered 29 per cent of the population, and has taken a lead over Andhra Pradesh.
UID authorities feel awareness drive in societies will help them to attain 80 per cent coverage by March 2012. Pune is around 16 per cent. Because of the upcoming elections, there has been some delay. We have 13 agencies and some organisations and banks helping us, a senior official said.
The official said problems of not receiving Aadhaar cards were yet to be sorted out. There were a lot of issues from agencies not uploading the list to the main portal and the main site unable to take such huge load. The inability of India Post at Kolkata too to send mails to various locations across the country was another issue.
The problems have been resolved to an extent with online status deliveries. The government plans to make social security pension scheme (Revenue),irrigation pump sets (Energy),society membership (Co-operatives),Bhagyalakshmi project (Women and Child Development),LPG connections and BPL cards (Food and Civil Supplies) and rural employment guarantee scheme Aadhaar-enabled.
