In this season of drizzles and showers, what can be more comforting than hot soups? Here’s a trail of some unusual soups available at city restaurants
The rains have been unrelenting and the temperatures have dipped to a pleasant number. It’s the time for long drives and pakoda-bhajji stop-overs. But,one can’t ignore the rising cases of colds and coughs during this rainy season,so it is wiser to pick a healthier option than the usual, fried monsoon snacks. Enter: soups. However, not the same old boring ones, but more unusual flavours with a mix and match of various ingredients.
Mutton Multani Soup
Piping hot soups can hardly be resisted during this time of the year. We have the Mutton Multani soup (Rs 100) on our menu which has been frequently ordered by our patrons, says Chef Syed of Dal Chini at Pimple Saudagar. This soup has moong dal mixed with mutton stalk and chopped pieces of mutton. It’s garnished with fried onions and some boiled rice. It’s becoming quite a hit with our non-vegetarian customers. For veggies,we have Veg Multani soup, he adds.
Japanese Egg Drop Soup
A drive down the green NDA-Pashan Road takes you to Trikaya, where the unique aromas of the different soups fill the restaurant environs. The Japanese Egg Drop Soup (Rs 125) is deliciously tempting. Chef Pradyuman elaborates,The Japanese Egg Drop has two eggs mixed with wakame seaweed and leafy veggies. Chicken can be added to this mixture. This is a very unique and popular soup here.
Seafood Laksa Soup
The Seafood Laksa (Rs 150) is a thick Singaporean soup. It has a south-east Asian curry flavour,as coconut milk is used along with seafood and pakchoy.
Soto Ayam Soup & Philippino Sinegang Seafood Soup
Other interesting soups on the Trikaya menu include the Soto Ayam (Rs 125) and the Philippino Sinegang Seafood soup (Rs 150). The Soto Ayam has bean sprouts with boiled or roasted chicken and a delicious serving of thin noodles. The Philippino soup is for those who like sour soups. A whole fish is used in this one.
Mulluk Dhani Soup & Jaadh Soup
Shiv Sagar (J M Road) boasts of unusual veg soups. Ramesh Pujari, manager,Shiv Sagar, talks about their Mulluk Dhani (Rs 55) and Jaadh (Rs 60) soups. He says,The Mulluk Dhani is a mix of dal and Chinese sauces. It has a unique Indian-Chinese flavour. The Jaadh soup has been renamed the Spinach soup. It’s a mix of lots of spinach and garlic. It’s healthy and tasty. However,we have noticed that people are a bit hesitant when it comes to ordering these unusual soups. They prefer sticking to the familiar list. This is one of the reasons why we renamed the Jaadh Soup.
Creamy Potato Soup
At Kalinga too, they have kept the soup name simple. The manager says,We call it Potato Soup (Rs 60). It is actually a delicious mix of spinach and potato in white cream. Those who’ve had it can’t stop themselves from repeatedly ordering it,and for those who haven’t,we usually suggest it. Since it’s creamy, and a mix of Indian and Italian,it’s also quite a hit with kids.
Pho Chiru
Chef Chiru Chandawarkar has concocted her own version of south-east Asian soups at Malaka Spice. The Pho Chiru (Rs 90) is a Vietnamese delicacy. I add lamb to this one and it’s unusual flavour lies in the liberal use of a lot of different herbs. The predominant flavour is anise. It’s a clear soup with noodles, she says.
