The Pune police Sunday arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with a murder that was initially registered as a case of accidental death. The case took a dramatic turn three days ago when an eyewitness to the incident called up the police and said accused Uttam Wanjale,55,a resident of New Ahiregaon,Warje, killed Shivarnappa Mallikarjun Padshetti,55,by smashing his head with a stone in an inebriated state on a July night.
The Warje police investigated his claims and found them to be true. The police finally arrested Wanjale on Sunday. A judicial magistrate sent him to police custody till October 30.
According to the police,Padshetti was found unconscious near Hotel Aditya Garden on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway on the morning of July 31,2013. He was taken to Sassoon General Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The autopsy had concluded that the kind of injuries suffered by Padshetti could be the result of a road accident. Since the body was found on the highway, the police registered a case of accidental death.
However,on October 25,a man (name withheld) claiming to be an eyewitness called up the Warje police and told them that Padshetti was actually murdered by Wanjale.
The police said Wanjale confessed to killing Padshetti under the influence of liquor.
