2008 batch given Jan deadline to exit FTII

Told to finish incomplete diploma projects.

Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) administration has stepped up the heat on the students of 2008 batch to finish their projects at the earliest and leave the institute. The administration has also sent out letters to parents of some students who, according to the administration, are habitual procrastinators and are likely to miss the deadline given to them.

As reported earlier, Dean (Films) Kedarnath Awati had last month issued individual deadlines for every project based on the additional work required on their films. It has also been conveyed to them that they wouldn’t be judged for the diploma films and that evaluation on ‘as is where is’ basis which was done during the strike period has been approved by Prashant Pathrabhe, FTII Director.
The administration, it’s been learned, wants the remaining six diploma projects to finish by end of January and is in no mood to give any extension beyond this deadline. The officials say this is important to admit a new batch for whom entrance tests have been taken in August 2015.

A senior FTII official said notices have been issued to some students who have not resumed their regular working shift, and notices have been sent to their parents too.

“For four films sound recording work is going on. We want this to be complete by January end. Of four teams, two teams were lagging behind so we have issued notices to them asking them to speed up and stick to the schedules allotted to them,” said the official.

“Soon after we got the go ahead from the administration, I started to work on sound. I took my shifts at the sound studio for a week. After than I failed to take shifts for three-four days, as I also had to submit the sessional work. So factually, the notice saying I have not even resumed by work post-strike is incorrect,” said a sound recording student who was issued a notice on Wednesday.

Students also blamed the administration for not letting them avail the sound recording facility in Mumbai for a final mix as has been customary.

“One shift in Mumbai studio is very important since our studio here at FTII has a lot of reverberation. Also, proper supervision at Mumbai
studios helps us to learn and improve the sound quality,” said the student.
