The city police on Sunday claimed to have cracked a 15-month-old murder case,in which an unidentified woman was found strangled with a scarf.
The body was found in Katraj Ghat at Bhilarewadi on April 12 last year.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Rajesh Mor told reporters that the woman was recently identified as Kalpana Salunke (40),hailing from Kapurhol village in Bhor tehsil of the district. One Anil Pangare (43) has been arrested in connection with the case,said Mor.
After recovering the body,the police had launched a search for missing persons reports with similar description at various police stations,in and around Pune. The first phase of the investigation dis not yield any results.
Pamphlets with the photo and description of the victim were were displayed at bus stands,Gram Panchayats,Talathi offices and so on. After a few months,a lead came from Rajgad police station in Pune rural jurisdiction. It was found that the description in the missing person case filed by Pramod Gavkar matched with that of the body. We establsihed that the body was of his sister,Kalpana Salunke,who was a labourer at Uttara Foods Pvt Ltd,at Ketkavale in Purandar
Further investigations revealed Salunke had an affair with Pangare who was also a labourer in the same company. He was arrested from Kapurhol.
Pangare,who is married and has three children,has said in his statement that Salunke was pregnant and had demanded marriage,leading him to kill her.
