1426 short-term courses soon at senior colleges,YCMOU centres

The courses will have flexible delivery mechanism to suit all types of needs.

As many as 1,426 short-term training courses in construction,automobile,healthcare,hospitality and agro-processing among 11 different sectors will soon be available at senior colleges and state open university’s study centres as a part of Skill Development Initiative Scheme (SDIS) of the Centre.

These Modular Employable Skills (MES) courses targets school dropouts,existing workers and ITI graduates to improve their employability. The courses will have flexible delivery mechanism to suit all types of needs. The minimum educational qualification for some of these courses is Class V.

To be run on part time,weekends,full time,onsite and offsite basis,these courses have been designed in consultation with the industry to help candidates gain fultime employment.

The State Directorate of Education (Higher) has asked all the state universities,Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) and senior colleges including those imparting B.Ed courses to start these courses at the earliest. “Universities and colleges will have to ensure early implementation of the MES courses,and have to submit a tri-monthly progress report,” joint director of Pune region,S S Shete said.

SDIS is a major component of the Prime Minister’s National Skill Development Mission that aims at creating skilled workforce of 50 crore in the country,including that of five crore in Maharashtra,by 2022.

The state government had to set up sectoral committees in 11 different identified fields,including construction,textile,pharmacy,IT and automobile where presently there is shortage of skilled workforce.

The aforesaid MES courses,which are approved by the National Council for Vocational Training,are also to be run through approved Vocational Training Providers besides by senior colleges and study centres of YCMOU.

SP College principal Dilip Sheth said efforts were underway to introduce MES courses from the academic year 2013-14.

“While on one hand there is large number of unemployed youth,on the other hand industries are in dire need of skilled workforce.
