10 injured in clashes between two groups in Kolhapur

Banners, posters and sound systems which were put up by the organisers to mark the occasion irked the local residents

At least 10 people were injured as violent clashes broke out between two communities in Siddharthnagar area of Kolhapur during a football club event on Saturday evening. Police said the mob vandalised at least six vehicles and set them on fire.

According to police, the violence broke out around 10pm on Saturday after, following which adequate police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

Police said the clash erupted during an event organised to mark 31 years of the Rajebagswar Football Club. Banners, posters and sound systems which were put up by the organisers to mark the occasion irked the local residents. They expressed their objections, resulting in heated arguments. This soon snowballed into a fullscale clash, said police.

Stones were hurled from both sides. A few vehicles, including cars and autos, were damaged and set on fire, said police.

An FIR has been registered, naming at least 100 people. The Kolhapur police urged people not to believe in any kind of rumours. They said leaders of the two groups have also appealed for peace.
