1 held,2 absconding after attack on cop

A 24-year-old constable with the Kothrud police suffered serious injuries after he was assaulted with a broken beer bottle when he tried to stop three persons from consuming alcohol in a public place late on Wednesday.

Constable had tried to prevent them from drinking,causing ruckus in public place

A 24-year-old constable with the Kothrud police suffered serious injuries after he was assaulted with a broken beer bottle when he tried to stop three persons from consuming alcohol in a public place late on Wednesday. Police have arrested one of the attackers,who is an accused in a 2005 murder case,while two others are absconding. The injured constable is Nilesh Vinayak Gurav. The Kothrud police have identified the the arrested suspect as Amol Gaikwad (24) and the two absconding suspects as Mahadev Lokhande and Rohit Sonavane. As per Gurav’s complaint,the incident took place when he was on his night patrol round along with another constable M D Shaikh. Around 11.30 pm,they spotted a Tavera car parked near dumping ground on the corner of Shastri Nagar Road.

“Loud music was playing from the car. We saw three persons consuming alcohol. We asked them to stop drinking. Gaikwad broke a bottle and first tried stab me in the stomach. I moved back and he then attacked my hands.” Gurav was taken to hospital with injuries on his elbow and shoulder.

Senior police inspector Chandrakaant Ghodke,who is the investigating officer,said,“Gaikwad had a case of murder registered against him in 2005. We are on the lookout for the two other suspects.” The three have been charged under IIPC Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty),307 (attempt to murder),506 (criminal intimidation).
