CPI(ML), which is part of the INDIA bloc, has named its candidates for Ara, Nalanda and Karakat seats. The party has fielded Paliganj MLA Sandeep Saurav from Nalanda opposite three-time JD(U) MP Kaushlendra Kumar, while Tarari MLA Sudama Prasad would take on BJP MP and Union Minister R K Singh from Ara. Former MLA Rajaram Singh would contest from Karakat against NDA candidate Upendra Kushwaha.

Sandeep Saurav (36), who was JNU Students Union general secretary in 2013, had not taken up the job of assistant professor in Hindi in 2017 for politics. He contested the 2020 Assembly polls successfully from Paliganj as a Mahagathbandhan nominee.

Saurav, a resident of Maner near Patna, had completed his masters from JNU in 2009 and PhD in 2014. Saurav had been two-time national secretary of All India Students Union till 2013. A first-generation politician, Saurav comes from an OBC family. His father was a marginal farmer.

Elated at the party’s decision to field him from Nalanda, Saurav said: “We will attack Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s politics that lacks principles. Three-time Nalanda MP has not raised any local issue in Parliament in the last 15 years. We will take up how the Mahagathbandhan government started addressing unemployment with sustained recruitment drives. After Nitish’s switchover to NDA, the momentum was lost. Also, there is concern over attacks on democratic values under the NDA rule.”

CPI (ML)’s Ara candidate Sudama Prasad (63), also an OBC, has been active in Bhojpur politics since 1997. He had also taken out Dalit Asmita Yatra following the 2016 flogging incident. Bhojpur has been a hotbed of social movement. Party’s Karakat candidate Rajaram Singh, an OBC Kushwaha, is pitted against Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief and former Karakat MP Upendra Kushwaha.
