An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police died after he was allegedly assaulted while trying to arrest a suspected drug trafficker at a wedding function at Lakshmipur village in Bihar’s Araria district in the early hours of Thursday.

ASI Rajiv Ranjan Mal was stationed at Phulkaha police station.

According to Araria SP Anjani Kumar, police received information at around 1 am that the alleged drug trafficker, Anmol Yadav, was at a wedding function in Lakshmipur. A team then raided the event to capture him.

“While the police successfully detained Yadav, a group of his associates among the villagers intervened, and forcibly released him from the police custody. During the altercation, the ASI was reportedly pushed after which he fell unconscious,” the SP said. The ASI was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.

Mukesh Kumar Saha, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Farbisganj, said three-four individuals had been detained for questioning. “Efforts are ongoing to locate additional suspects involved in the attack,” he said.

Police are awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of Ranjan’s death.

Ranjan was from Janakinagar in the Naya Ramnagar police station area of Munger district, and joined the police force in 2007. He served at the Phulkaha police station for the past two years, officers said. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
