To some, she is the outspoken relative, who always has an opinion on everything from disease to divinity, while to others she is a colleague who braves the world with her biting wit. In March 2012,when UK-based Backland Studios released a meme on Facebook called Aunty Acid, this rather sassy character had a universal appeal. Within six months, she had won over 1,20,000
fans globally.
Aunty Acid is modelled on (Creative Head) Ged Backlands neighbour while he was growing up in Liverpool,England. We wanted to create a female character who had a lot of life experience but was still young enough to have her own teeth, hence her being an aunty instead of a grandma, says Raychel Backland, social media manager at Backland Studios.
They have now introduced an Indian version. While she retains the pink cotton candy hairdo, she wears a sari and golden bangles. The responsibility for styling her was down to the Backland Studios illustrator Dave Iddon,at our Indian coordinator,Ravikumar Venkatachalams request, says Raychel. They will invite suggestions from fans in India, they say. For now, they have posters which reads Ganpati Bappa Morya and Namaste.
