After a delay caused by technical glitches, the first merit list for admissions to degree courses in colleges affiliated to Mumbai University (MU) declared Tuesday, saw the cut-off marks going up by 1 to 5 per cent.
While some colleges witnessed a significant rise of 4-5 per cent in the cut off list as compared to last year,a few others reported a marginal rise of 0.2-2 percent.
Students were asked to register online before submitting the hard copies of filled application forms to individual colleges. A copy of the pre-admission form has to be attached with the application form of each college the candidate applies to. The Pre-Admission Online Registration facility was introduced this year. On June 3,the website reportedly crashed and students were unable to log onto the varsitys admission portal. By evening, the site was back on its feet, but the registration process was not working.
The varsity had to postpone the declaration of its first merit list to June 11 due to heavy rains.
However, many principals and academicians feel that the online admission process is not serving its purpose, leading to chaos and confusion amongst students.
Kavita Rege, principal of Sathaye college at Vile Parle said There was a marginal rise of one to two percent in cut off marks at our college. Trying to get students enrolled directly through the online process has ended up complicating admission procedure. The new system has added to their stress because of the technical issue.
What is the point of having an online admission process when students still have to manually go to fill out forms in individual collegs, questioned another principal of a reputed college in western suburbs.
